Hair loss treatment

September 2017
Hair grows, lives and falls out and is the natural order of things. In most cases especially male pattern baldness it is a normal physiological process, but for those who struggle to come to terms with it and for others where their hair loss is significant, then there are a few treatments and techniques which may help.

Prevention and treatments

  • Tips on how to prevent baldness and to improve your hairs health:
    • Enjoy a diet rich with eggs, fish, green vegetables, trace elements, zinc and amino-acids;
    • Massage your scalp with essential oils to activate micro-circulation;
    • Avoid violent brushing, blow-drying, hair colouring/dyes and styling products.
  • Some treatments are simple and accessible.
    • Shampoos and serums that fight hair loss can help whilst using them, but the effects will wear off after stopping them.
    • Food supplements rich in vegetable gelatin and vitamins;
    • For pathological hair loss, a medication can be prescribed by your GP or dermatologist, but some are not available on the NHS.

Hair Transplants

Under local anaesthetic, hairs are taken from the back and sides of the head and transplanted to the bald areas. This is performed as tiny punch biopsies as follicular units containing 1 -4 follicles are transplanted. This is not usually available on the NHS and is performed by specialist in hair transplantation.

Reduction of bald patches is an alternative or used alongside hair transplantation. It consists in withdrawing the smooth part of the bald patch and bringing it closer to the hairy zones.
