Amino acids are molecules that, combined with each-other, form proteins. Proteins have among other roles that of the formation and the development of muscles. Amino acids function like fuel and promote muscular growth and recovery after exercise. Certain amino acids can be made by the organism and others cannot, and so are called essential amino acids. The latter must come from food. Essential amino acids can be found in animal proteins or in nutritional supplements.
