Asthenia is a term often used to express physical fatigue. More precisely, it means a degradation in the general state leading to a generalized weakness of the body. It is distinguished from fatigue, as it is a state of exhaustion which occurs before any effort. Asthenia is not a disorder in itself, but a symptom. It can be the symptom of very many disorders like anemia, viral or bacterial infections, cancer, or the abuse of certain substances, among others. To treat asthenia, one must find and cure the cause. Sometimes -asthenia is used as a suffix to describe the decrease of the capacities of an organ (ex: myasthenia which means "muscle fatigue").
