Osteophytosis is the presence of one or more osteophytes. These are bony growths that develop on bone extremities, particularly frequent in osteoarthritis, a degenerative disease of joint cartilage. Osteophytosis manifests in advanced stages of osteoarthritis, and the bony projections are sometimes held accountable for joint pain or discomfort in certain types of movement. Nevertheless, it is often difficult to distinguish between symptoms caused by osteoarthritis and those caused by osteophytes.
