Definition

Infibulation is genital mutilation with the goal of preventing sexual intercourse. Male infibulation may consist of placing a ring on the genitals, closing the foreskin over the head of the penis. Female infibulation generally consists either of the utilization of a similar ring, or a suture of the small or large lips of the vulva, with a tiny opening to permit the passage of menstrual blood and urine. Ablation of the clitoris is also occasionally practiced. This practice is illegal in most countries of the world, but is still performed by certain ethnicities.
