Definition

A deficiency is synonymous with a lack, or even absence, of a substance necessary for the functioning of the body. Nutritional deficiencies are usually due to a faulty diet. The lack of water is the cause of dehydration; that of vitamin D is responsible for the severe stages of scurvy; iron deficiencies are one of the causes of anemia. In developed countries, deficiencies remain moderate, but they are frequent and responsible for serious disorders in developing countries especially among children.
