Definition

Catabolism is the series of chemical processes that leads to the degradation of molecular compounds absorbed by the body in order to generate energy. The different molecules are broken down into smaller molecules, and these reactions release energy. This term is opposed to anabolism which includes all manufacturing reactions, including those of tissues. Together they form the metabolism, all the chemical changes taking place in the body.
