Definition

Subutex® is the commercial name for a molecule similar to morphine called buprenorphine. It is prescribed to people presenting with severe heroin dependency, or addiction to similar drugs when going through withdrawal. Subutex® prescription is strictly controlled by medical professionals, who are only able to prescribe it over a maximum of 28 days. The prescription process for this drug is different from that of others, with precise regulations to follow, the dosage written clearly, and the prescription to be filled out weekly at the same pharmacy. The quantity is very gradually reduced in order to wean the patient off the substance.
