Atavism is a physical, moral, or psychological particularity that reappears after being latent for several generations. It is often mentioned in a negative way, to describe defects or deviant or violent behavior. It is a pejorative term intended to stigmatize a recurrent family character trait. The term atavism is generally used to refer to heredity or genetic heritage as a whole.
