AIDS Virus Symptoms that Should Alert

February 2018

HIV weakens the immune system and causes the appearance of the AIDS virus, or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. The appearance of one or more of the following symptoms should encourage you to quickly consult a doctor to perform an HIV test.

Symptoms of HIV/AIDS

HIV can manifest itself in the appearance of persistent fatigue, sudden weight loss, increased ganglions, and diarrhea.

This can be followed by the occurrence of opportunistic infections. These are a group of infectious diseases commonly found in people with compromised immune systems, such as people with HIV. A dry cough with difficulty breathing and fever may suggest tuberculosis or Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, both of which are opportunistic infections.

The appearance of neurological abnormalities, such as headache, accompanied by fever; drowsiness; convulsions; dizziness; paralysis; or behavioral disorders, may suggest a neurological disorder caused by the virus, such as cerebral toxoplasmosis.

The sudden onset of loss of visual field or a significant loss of vision may indicate cytomegalovirus retinitis and could point to an HIV infection.

HIV may also manifest itself as gastrointestinal cytomegalovirus infection, characterized by abdominal pain, accompanied by diarrhea, fever, and a deterioration of the general condition.

The appearance of herpes lesions, including genital herpes requiring medical attention, can also be a red flag for HIV.

Severe headache, with fever, vomiting, and photophobia may suggest meningitis due to Cryptococcus.

The appearance of purplish and painful nodules on the extremities or plaques on the face can evoke a Kaposi's sarcoma.

The occurrence of unexplained fever, lasting for several weeks, accompanied by fatigue, weight loss, and a change in the general state can evoke an opportunistic infection.
