Definition

Vulvodynia is a term referring to localized pain in the external genital organs of the woman. It can be localized in one part of the vulva (such as clitoritodynia, for example), or be spread over the entire organ. This term defines chronic pain of the external genitalia of a woman, and is typically not used when describing acute pain, as is the case with an infection, which is rather described as vulvitis. Vulvodynia can also manifest during sexual activity, in which case it is called dyspareunia.
