Esophageal cancer refers to the presence of cancerous tumors
in the esophagus. The esophagus is a conduit that connects the mouth to the stomach, and that makes up part of the digestive system, through which ingested food progresses. A diagnosis of esophageal cancer can be made after a fibroscopy (insertion of an instrument that allows observation of the mucus membranes) and a biopsy
(tissue sampling). Esophageal cancers are most frequently attributed to alcoholism
or a serious tobacco addiction
