Irritated glans - Definition

Definition

The glans at the tip of the penis can sometimes become irritated. The glans is then red, inflamed and more or less painful: this is called balanitis. It itches and progresses towards a urethritis with inflammation of the urethra which may occur as a side effect, with the appearance of a whitish discharge from the urethra. Balanitis is often due to a local infection, aggravated by poor, or sometimes too intense, personal hygiene, or a virus or fungus. Balanitis is common in small boys: this condition is not serious. If the penis is irritated after sex, it may be a simple lubrication problem and not balanitis.
