Lipase is an enzyme primarily secreted by the pancreas that has a role in digestion and in pancreatic inflammation diagnosis, which can be established based on excessive lipase blood levels. These levels are measured by blood test, preferably conducted when the patient has an empty stomach. This test is called a serum lipase value test, with values considered normal <190 UI/L. This test is generally recommended for patients presenting abdominal pain in order to diagnose or rule out pancreatitis. In cases of acute pancreatitis, serum lipase values increase by 4 to 10 times compared to maximum reference values.
