The term malleolus refers to one of the two bony tuberosities located at the ankle joint
which appears as a projection under the skin on either side. There is the medial malleolus, or medial tibial malleolus, a normal projection of the lower part of the tibia and the lateral malleolus, the lateral or peroneal malleolus, which is itself a part of the fibula. The malleolus can be affected in ankle problems, especially after trauma, which is common in ankle sprains.
