Definition

The latissimus dorsi muscle is a flat muscle situated on the trunk, shoulders, and back. The latissimus dorsi muscle is covered by a fibrous membrane that is lodged between the 7th thoracic vertebra, 5th lumbar vertebra, sacrum, and hip bone. A tendon connects it to the armpit. The latissimus dorsi muscle enables the internal rotation and extension of the arm, lateral pelvic tilt, and breathing in.
