Amoebiasis - Definition

Ask a question

Amoebiasis is an infection of the large intestine due to a parasite found mainly in tropical countries. Most patients are healthy carriers. The parasite is found in fecal matter and is transmitted by not washing hands, contaminated water, or contaminated food. Amoebiasis consists of chronic diarrhea that can be fatal, irregular over time, alternating between periods of constipation, and accompanied by abdominal cramps and sometimes muscle spasms around the anus. Amoebiasis is treated with an anti-parasitic and can relapse.
