Arthrodesis of the spine - Definition

Arthrodesis of the spine is a surgical operation recommended for advanced spinal osteoarthritis when the intervertebral discs are so worn that the nerves which are near them become "pinched" provoking violent lumbar or sciatic pain. Arthrodesis of the spine will enable the fusion of several intervertebral joints with the help of screws, plates, or rods made of surgical steel. Arthrodesis of the spine can sometimes be paired with a bone graft. The graft is then generally taken from the pelvic bone.
