Vocal cord nodule - Definition

Nodules are abnormal growths, that are usually round, and that cumulate on the surface of tissue or in an organ. When found on the vocal cords, there can be only one or several, and take the form of a small lump on the surface. In the majority of cases, nodules are benign tumors on the vocal cords. They can also be lesions indicative of cancer. Principal symptoms of vocal cord nodules consist of vocal impairment where the voice appears altered, such as difficulty speaking or a raspy, hoarse voice. Treatment consists above all of resting the voice to avoid overworking it. If there are any suspicions of cancer, samples can be taken and, if cancer is found, the nodules can be surgically removed.
