Priapism - Definition

Ask a question

Priapism is a condition consisting of a strong and prolonged erection that lasts several hours causing extreme discomfort, even pain. It occurs absent of any desire or sexual stimulation, and is not relieved by ejaculation. Priapism can occur without any obvious explanation, or can be cause by other factors, notably by medication in cases where erectile medication is taken, or by toxic agents, trauma, or blood disease. Applying ice to the area can be enough to relieve this condition, but if it persists, consultation with a doctor is required to perform a puncture, injection, or even surgery.
