A proctologist is a doctor specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the anus and rectum. Proctology, more often referred to as colorectal surgery, not only represents a medical specialty in itself, but also belongs to the field of gastroenterology. A proctologist can perform several common medical examinations, such as digital rectal examination, anoscopy, or rectoscopy. A number of conditions can be detected by a proctologist, notably including colorectal cancer, anal fissure, hemorrhoids, and fecal incontinence.
