Bloating - Definition

Ask a question

Bloating is a symptom characterized by a swollen abdomen and an uncomfortable sensation generated by an increase in intestinal gas. This exerts pressure inside the digestive system which is responsible for pains and emissions of flatulence to expel the gas. In the majority of cases, bloating is a result of benign causes, such as swallowing an excessive amount of air during a meal, or the disruption of intestinal flora which generates additional gas. To avoid bloating, it is recommended to eat slowly, to not talk with a full mouth, and to possibly resort to certain drugs that diminish bloating.
