Convalescence - Definition

Convalescence is the period during which a patient is recuperating from a disease and gradually recovers his or her original state of health. The recovery time depends on the illness and recovery capabilities of the body during the healing process. It also depends on the treatment which was performed. Treatment involving surgery usually requires longer than convalescence after local treatment. The recovery may be interrupted by periods of relapse. It can be done in adapted environments especially in the elderly or in case of serious illness such as stroke.
