Dermabrasion - Definition

Dermabrasion is a surgical technique sometimes used by dermatologists to remove the top layer of the dermis. Dermabrasion may require a local anesthetic. The skin is scraped with an abrasive device at the epidermis. Dermabrasion is performed to remove acne marks, mild rosacea, and wrinkles. It requires several weeks of healing without sun exposure. The laser is also sometimes used. The term dermabrasion is also used to describe traumatic damage to the dermis with loss of the surface of the skin.
