Alcohol detoxification - Definition

Detoxification refers to ridding the body of toxins to which it has been exposed. Alcohol detoxification is thus the withdrawal of an alcoholic. It must be done under medical supervision, sometimes hospitalized, because it can cause delirium tremens, a syndrome due to lack of alcohol to the body, in the event of sudden failure. The alcohol detox is based on stopping the consumption of alcohol, sometimes with the help of temporary medication which reduces the craving for alcohol. This treatment is associated with psychological support in the long term. Detoxification should be voluntary in order to maximize the chances of success.
