Desquamation means the peeling and the loss of the surface layer of the epidermis. The flakes of skin that come off are called scales. Peeling is a natural phenomenon in the death of the most superficial cells which are generated by the dermis, but can also occur earlier due to a sunburn, a facial, vitamin deficiency, and use of detergent products. It can also be the result of an allergy such as eczema, an inflammatory disease, such as psoriasis, or an infectious disease. In cases of cancer of the skin, peeling sometimes appears.
