Anus - Definition

The anus is the part of the human body located at the end of the digestive system, just after the anal canal, and through which gas and fecal matter is expelled. The anus is situated in the perineal zone, just next to the genital organs. It is supplied with blood by the inferior rectal artery and vein. The anus remains closed due to sphincter muscles which normally only open consciously, except in young children. It may be susceptible to hemorrhoids. Fecal incontinence is a consequence of the sphincters loosening.
