Spasticity - Definition

Spasticity is a muscular disorder defined by the overcontraction of a muscle. It is a neuromuscular disorder, caused either by a neural problem affecting the motor neurons of voluntary muscles, or a dysfunction in the neural communication between a nerve and a muscle. When a limb is passively moved by the examining physician, its muscular resistance increases, and it returns to its original position once the physician's intervention stops. This disorder is particularly common in certain conditions such as progressed-stage multiple sclerosis, or in the aftermath of a stroke or vascular accident.
