Astrocyte - Definition

Astrocytes are cells present in the nervous system that protect myelin and nerve tissues, eliminate dead cells, fight outside agents, and carry nutrients and oxygen. They balance the nervous system and promote neurotransmission. Astrocytes are also active during a lesion of the spinal marrow or the brain. They are indispensable to the functioning of the nervous system and to the survival of neurons.
