Autolysis - Definition

Autolysis refers to the phenomenon during which cells self-destruct in a sterile environment, but it may also refer to suicide. In medicine, autolysis is the act of voluntary suicide. In biology, it is the process of cellular auto-destruction which results in the degradation of a tissue or organ. It is due to autolysis that certain homeopathic treatments are developed, from the residue of autolytic animal organs, called autolysate.
