Bronchiectasis is an affliction that affects the bronchi (conduits that begin at the junction of the trachea and branch towards each lung). Bronchiectasis thus affects the respiratory system of an organism. It consists of the permanent and irreversible expansion of several medium-sized bronchi. This is generally accompanied by a secretion of mucus, causing a loose cough, and is often complicated by a bronchial infection.
