Echolalia is the tendency to repeat the last words spoken by another person, in a spontaneous, involuntary, and systematic fashion. It is an echoing phenomenon observed especially in subjects suffering some form of dementia or mental retardation. In psychiatry, echolalia is classed as a stereotypy. It is a syndrome that often accompanies dysphasia. Echolalia is a form of verbal communication often observed in autistic children.
