Sprained ankle - Definition

A sprained ankle is a trauma of the ligaments situated in the ankle joint. It is a very common pathology, that can occur during daily activities or athletic practice, as a result of a misstep or a bad landing after a jump. A sprained ankle is treated in various ways: rest and elevation of the foot, application of compressive bandages, icing the affected area, taking anti-inflammatories, etc. Rehabilitation of the ankle with sessions of physical therapy may be necessary in case of a serious sprain.
