Commonly known as a bunion, hallux abducto valgus is a growing deformity of the big toe that little by little protrudes out to the side at its joint and is commonly accompanied by dislocation. This physical abnormality affects nearly solely women, aged between 40 and 50 years. It can be caused by hereditary factors, by wearing high heels or ill-fitting shoes, or by being flat-footed. Hallux abducto valgus causes intense pain, sometimes with the added complication of inflammation, corns, arthritis, and more. With well-fitted shoes, an orthopedic brace, and physiotherapy, surgery can be avoided.
