Hip - Definition

The hip is the area of the body located at the joint between the leg and the torso. It links the femur and ilium (the pelvic bone), with the buttocks making up the posterior section. The two hip joints play an essential role in many movements of flexion and rotation of the body parts. They are, however, particularly susceptible to infection, and to various lesions that can affect the cartilage, notably in cases of arthritis. The most severe conditions affecting the hips are surgically treated, often by implanting a prosthetic hip replacement.
