History of psychiatry - Definition

The history of psychiatry addresses the evolution of mental and psychiatric disease studies through the centuries. Psychiatry, just like medicine, has benefitted from significant developments that strongly rooted it in each era. It represents a branch of medicine that used to be particularly closely linked with religious beliefs. The different treatment methods have also advanced, evolving from exorcism to therapies associated with medication. Mental disorders are now considered as concrete pathologies, and not divine manifestations.
