Hypersomnia - Definition

Hypersomnia, not to be confused with narcolepsy, is an excessive sleep disorder. Sufferers are often tired during the day. Idiopathic hypersomnia is the rarer form for which no cause has been found. It manifests as daytime drowsiness and extreme fatigue despite adequate nighttime sleep. This form can impact on the socio-professional life of the sufferer. As for secondary hypersomnia, this is caused by fibromyalgia, clinical depression, or brain lesions. Finally, recurring hypersomnia manifests in regular episodes.
