Omentum - Definition

Omentum is the name given to two folds of the peritoneum, a fine membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and contains the viscera. There is a distinction between the lesser and the greater omentum. The first connects the liver to the stomach, while the second descends from the stomach to the transverse colon and covers the surface of the intestines. The omentum may be affected by various afflictions or lesions, the most frequent being peritoneal carcinoma, generally due to a cancer in this area.
