Eructation - Definition

An eructation, more familiarly called a belch or burp, is the emission of gas from the digestive tube through the mouth. This expulsion of gas is generally accompanied by a sound and may occur in various situations: ingestion of fizzy drinks, aerophagia (absorption of air during swallowing), ingesting food too quickly, gastric reflux, etc. Eructation is not a phenomenon unique to humans; it also exists in certain ruminant animals such as cows and sheep (expulsion of methane by the digestive process).
