Etiology - Definition

Etiology (or etiopathogeny) means, in medical terms, both the study of the causes and factors of a disease and the study of the causes themselves. This medical discipline bases its research of causes on the study of signs and symptoms of a disease (semiology). This term is also used in psychiatry to define the potential factors of a mental illness.
