Definition

A eunuch is a man who has undergone castration, or an ablation of the testicles, and sometimes even removal of the entire genital apparatus. This practice was very common in the Chinese Empire and in the Middle East during the Ottoman Empire. Historically, the eunuch has always had a particular social and symbolic status in European and Oriental society. Traditionally, he was in charge of looking after the women in harems, hence his name in ancient Greek.
