Eventration (medicine) - Definition

In medicine, eventration is a hernia which generally forms from a scar on the abdomen. It is a projection of a section of the digestive tube under the skin of the stomach area. An eventration possesses the same characteristics as a hernia, in that it is painless, that it increases in volume during effort, and that it is possible to reduce it. Nevertheless, eventration can, over time, become sensitive and impossible to reduce. Eventually, the eventration may be complicated by necrosis and may cause peritonitis. In this case, a surgical intervention must be performed. In order to prevent eventrations, it is necessary to monitor abdominal scars and ensure they do not become infected.
