Idiopathic - Definition

The adjective "idiopathic" refers to a symptom or disease with no known underlying cause. This type of condition develops independently from all other diseases and are therefore the opposite of what are called "symptomatic" diseases. Although in most cases many different causes can be attributed to diseases, certain conditions exist that have no visible or obvious explanation. This is a term used in nosology, a branch of medicine which establishes the classifications of diseases.
