Lymphangitis - Definition


Lymphangitis is the inflammation of the lymphatic vessels that transport lymph, which plays an important role in defending the body. It is usually due to a localized infection, often of a limb, or compression of the lymphatic vessels. It appears as swelling in the path of the vessel, a painful skin redness, fever if an infection is concerned, and swelling of one or more lymph nodes in the drainage area is also possible. Often biological analyses, or an ultrasound in cases of persistence, and sometimes a biopsy if necessary determine the cause of lymphangitis.
