Lymphopenia - Definition

Ask a question

Lymphopenia means a decrease in the number of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes, produced by the bone marrow, ensure the proper functioning of the immune system, actively involved in defending the body against microbial agents. Low levels of lymphocytes may therefore cause immune deficiency and increased susceptibility to infections. A low level of lymphocytes can be caused by drugs, as in the case of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and autoimmune diseases such as a virus or AIDS.
