My mother has always been a drinker, from as far as I can remember. She started with beer, then wine, then vodka, now it is whisky. She gets drunk to the point of passing out sometimes in front of my family and friends. Sometimes, she closes the door of her room so that we do not "bother" her by telling her to stop. She has been like this (drunk EVERYDAY!) for 5 years now and I was wondering if she had become an alcoholic. She does not drink much actually (5-6 glasses of whisky per night) and I was wondering if you had to finish the whole bottle to be classified as an alcoholic or if at her state she is already one?

Hello
Oh dear your mother has a drinking problem, and I would say she is an alcoholic. However does she want to stop drinking? Alcoholism is a disease and you will all need help and support through this journey. Your mother will require specialist help to stop drinking and I would advice you to speak to your GP about detox. I think that your mother might have a problem with it and might need more psychological help than she thinks. you might also seek the help of AA. Take care and good luck
